Self Reflection

To put it briefly; in terms of literacy- I suck. Ive always been a hard headed student with an unfortunately terrible ethic when it comes to school work. While reflecting on myself in a literary situation, I could help but think about one clear example- studying for my Physics tests as a freshman. Throughout the course of the semester I was slowly getting left behind, with almost no motivation to catch up. For some people, the title “Physics” is a lot more scary than the actual material presented in the class. To me, physics was a different language and with little interest in the subject it became foreign. I specifically recall one chapter, on light and color waves, where instead of communicating facts and knowledge to me, the book seemed to throw information at me with little to no explanation. There was one form of media that aided me in studying though- Beta Waves. Listening to Beta Waves somehow slowed down the learning process for me and allowed myself to get a better understanding of the course material .

Electracy has played a huge factor in the communication process for me, specifically through social media and the internet. I think It is safe to say that almost all users on social media have shared or posted a photo to support an organization or cause. This is also a way I have communicated on the internet. Last year, my family found out my mom had stage 3 breast cancer. At first it was hard to communicate the situation to all the family members, friends and members of the community. With the help of Facebook and various forms of media, I was able to share useful and insightful links and spread the word about this life threatening disease- a useful tool for communicating.

Reflecting on my self orality was a bit difficult since I don’t base my life off any distinct religions or principles. Ritually though, I have the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Consisting of 128 members who went through the same process and set of rituals to get into the house, Kappa Sigma has been a model for life principles. Multiple rituals have been passed down through generations of Kappa Sigma gentlemen, some light hearted, and some professional. The 4 pillars of; Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service are what we in Kappa Sigma not only like to base our fraternity on, but our everyday lives as well.  A light hearted example of this tradition/ ritual is the game of snappa. Though it is a drinking game, snappa has been known to unite brothers and is taken very seriously around the house. In my experience with the game, it has been a way for the fraternity to gather together, enjoy each others company and recollect on how lucky we are to be here. Unlike taking a physics test, I will always have the motivation to play a game of snappa and to be a significant part of Kappa Sigma.

Voice

By definition, voice is “an instrument or medium of expression.”

Living in Boulder CO, seeing homelessness is an everyday occurrence. It is also easy to see the communication barrier between the “homed” and the homeless. We grow up associating homelessness with loss and failure, and in todays world most people avoid contact at all cost in order to stray away from an awkward experience with the homeless. While we are judging the homeless, we are also assuming that they are judging us- resulting in the lack of communication. What this issue needs is a voice. A possible outlet for people living in homes or on the streets, to share their thoughts and experiences. A problem is a lot more likely to get resolved if it is clearly addressed. Lets create a voice between normal citizens and the homeless so that we may disrupt the communication barrier.
